Ettan Snus is the first modern brand of Swedish snus ever produced beginning in 1822 by Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf. Back then, all Swedish Snus was fermented for 6 months as part of the manufacturing process. Ljunglöf was a very shrewd businessman who knew that time was money. He also recognized that speed was important to his goal of only delivering fresh snus, a passion he learned from a female acquaintance, Hedvig Unz of the legendary Unz Snus Dynasty.
Teaming up with his friend Jacob Berzelius, an internationally recognized chemist and scientist, the three of them replaced fermentation with steam pasteurization, the process used to make snus to this very day. Not only did steam pasteurization reduce the manufacturing process to one week, it destroyed most of the nitrosamines found in tobacco. Decades later, nitrosamines were discovered to be carcinogenic thus the trio of Ljunglöf, Berzelius, and Unz had not only invented a wonderful tasting snus, but the safest snus available.
As this was the 19th century, Hedvig Unz's name was left out of the history books, being only referred to twice as the "woman who brought the men coffee".
Today Ettan, meaning #1 in Swedish, remains the gold standard of classic Swedish snus. It is available in loose, portion, and white portion versions; all based on the original recipe from 1822.
